New Officers

It’s been a busy few weeks, we have been doing a lot that hasn’t made it
onto the blog yet.
For now, we’ll update with a new officer roster:

- *President*: Jordan Osborne, rising Senior
- *Vice President*: Lee Walker, Senior
- *Secretary*: Elissa Visotski, rising Senior
- *Treasurer*: Courtney Price, rising Junior

We have one more event for this semester; we will be covering the USC Mud
Run on Saturday, April 21. If you are interested in going, let us know on our
facebook group .

I have enjoyed and appreciated my time as an officer the past three years.
Every year, I’ve felt like I had better insight into what a career in this
industry can be like. I’ll say this one more time: this student chapter for
NPPA can be whatever you want it to be, so I thank you all for contributing
to make it an unforgettable time.

Best of Photojournalism is judging the final Television category...

Best of Photojournalism is judging the final Television category and it will be happening at the Coliseum on campus! (link to NPPA article) Judging will take place in the CEO room starting at 8:30am Thursday, March 15 and running throughout the day until Sunday afternoon. There will be a lunch for students on Friday at noon, which you will need to RSVP for so we can plan ahead. You can RSVP to prof. McGill.

Student volunteers will be needed for the event. It is actually a great opportunity to get to know people who have been working in our field for some time. A list of the judges can be found here. Volunteering includes running the social media, media/projecting equipment, and general overseeing that all needs are met for the judges and other faculty/staff. Again, this is a unique chance to get deep insights into the journalism industry.

Realized I forgot to upload this last weekend. Just some quick clips of shooting the softball game with Rebecca Ducker.

Also, our photoshop night on tuesday will also be to help anyone enter the South Carolina News Photographer’s Association 2011 Student Photographer of the Year award. Aaron Middeke and Sarah Landon won all three spots last year, so it’s open game for everyone! Bring anything you think you may want to enter and we’ll help get it ready to submit. Ask us any questions you may have here, or on the facebook event.

The University of South Carolina’s student NPPA chapter hosted their second meeting of the semester Tuesday with guest speaker Tracy Glantz. Tracy shared stories and photos from her experience with photographing recent election events as well as those of years past.

We have our next meeting scheduled: Tuesday, February 7th at Calcott 101 (that should be our normal meeting room for the rest of the semester). Tracy works at The State newspaper here in Columbia and will be speaking about her extensive experience photographing political elections. RSVP on facebook, and come with questions and any photos or anything you would like critiqued.

Also, don’t forget we have extra Journalism school t-shirts that will be available to purchase soon. Let us know here or in the facebook group if you’re interested in getting one and we’ll let you know ASAP.

Tuesday night (1/17) members gathered for a fabulous speaker, Sam Cranston, from NASCAR Illustrated. Sam showed us several of his photos that had been published and answered questions from students about his career. He was also generous enough to provide us with some copies of the magazine and point out where his work appeared in it. If you weren’t there, you really missed out on a great time. Keep checking back for more meeting updates and we hope to see you all come out soon!

First meeting for Spring 2012:

Tonight! NASCAR photographer, Sam Cranston will be talking about his work and sharing from his extensive career.

Our room has changed to Russel House 305. Enter via the stairs from Greene st. and it’s on the third floor, go down the hallway to the left from the lobby. 7pm, more details at the facebook event.

T-Shirts are here!

Fresh out of the plastic wrap, t-shirt orders are available to pick up from prof. McGill’s office, room 4005E in the beloved Coliseum. If you were unable to place your order last semester, we have plenty of extras that will be available for purchase soon.

Upcoming events:

O ur first meeting this Tuesday, 7pm, in ~~Calcott 003~~ Russel House 305 with NASCAR photographer Sam Cranston.
Student Organization fair this Wednesday, 11am - 2pm in front of the Russell House. We are planning on having a photo booth where we can print people’s pictures on the spot, so if you want to help with that, let us know by leavinga comment here or on the facebook group.

Spring 2012

Happy New Year!

We have a lot planned for this semester, starting Tuesday, January 17. Sam Cranston worked for 18 years with The Daytona Beach News-Journal and for the past five years has worked with the NASCAR Illustrated staff in Charlotte, NC. He will be our first speaker of the semester.

We will be meeting in ~~Calcott 003 again~~ Russel House 305, at 7pm. Let us know on our facebook group if you think you may be late, but come, bring a friend and some questions.

Our student chapter was named the most outstanding student chapter of the year by the national organization! Our officers and members gathered to celebrate.
Thanks to everyone who has helped us this semester and the past few years. We have learned a lot, and have already started planning for next semester.

For the rest of the semester, we have two public events and one event for students who are members of the national organization.

Multimedia Edit — PUBLIC - Tue. Nov. 8 — 7pm (and earlier to shoot the event)
we will shoot one of the political events this Tuesday (8th) then gather at our usual time/place (Calcott 003, 7pm) to edit our pictures make a multimedia piece. We will need pictures and audio, so feel free to help however you want.
Their is a local election on that Tuesday, but it may not be very visual, so we will find out this week what the Occupy Columbia protestors are doing then in response to the elections.
Member’s Dinner — MEMBERS - Tue. Nov. 15, 7pm
All students who are members of the national organization are invited to talk about this past semester and plans for next semester.
Lighting Workshop — PUBLIC - Fri. Nov. 18, 10am – 1pm
Prof. Weintraub will walk through the advanced lighting equipment that is available to all USC Journalism students and any USC student who is a member of the National Press Photographers Association.

Congratulations goes out to Megan Vince for her napping cow photo that took Best in Show as well as first place in the Beauty category, Courtney Price for her man holding a stuffed banana, first place in the Humor category, and Lee Walker for her laughing girl on the slide, which took first place in the Portrait Category!
